The power to stop thoughts from running your life. Enhanced intimacy with the moments and people in your life. Insight. Self knowledge. Better Health.
A feeling of profound connection to the universe.
Do these sound familiar? :)
“I’ve tried meditation. I’m not good at it.”
“I can’t sit still.” “I am easily distracted.” “I can't stop thinking...” "I can do it at retreats but not in real life." "It's sooo boring." |
“Snooze button: 100, Meditation: 0.”
“I love meditation, but can't make myself do it.” "I roll my eyes just hearing that music and that 'therapist-y' brainwashing guided meditation voice." "I can't deal with what comes up when I am still." "I'm allergic to the spiritual 'scene'". |
What if meditation could be...

What is "Wild" Meditation? How is it different?
Wild Meditation liberates meditation from the confines of the cushion. Most of us aren't here to spend this lifetime sitting on a mountain top. Life is busy -- it is often too hard to go from 100mph to 0mph on command. Rather than throwing on the brakes and escaping from life in order to find peace, Wild Meditation uses playful exploration in the midst of daily life activities to help you discover the peace and wisdom that lives within you no matter what you are doing. Wild Meditation allows you to rest in your center as you express your unique, quirky, authentic self and open to the full range of experience life has to offer.
I learned to meditate in the East, in Burma, where I was a Buddhist nun and lived in a monastery for nearly 2 years. I was taught that meditation is not just "sitting on a cushion" -- meditation is something you do in every activity, in every moment of your life.
We meditate to become MORE present to life, to understand ourselves and the world, to understand how the human mind, body and heart work, and to gain compassion and wisdom. Anyone can meditate, no matter who they are or what's happening in their life.
I was shocked when I returned to the West, to see how differently meditation was taught here. I noticed that many people were struggling because of these differences.
Western meditation was causing people to move away from their lives, to reject their experience, to feel superior to others who couldn't do it "properly" or didn't adopt a certain lifestyle. People were spending more time reading, writing and talking about meditation than actually practicing it.
While teachers taught that "it's all one" and so everything is divine, they all taught in a very similar voice (I call it therapist voice), adopted a similar new age lifestyle, and focused more on the details of the means--meditation-- than the results and pure intention of the activity. Many people were getting more stressed, self deprecating and rigid with themselves through the very process that was supposed to bring them into their natural, relaxed state of saying yes to themselves and life.
Einstein said "insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results." Yet, that is how most people here are trying to learn meditation. Wild Meditation offers a new path-- one that goes with rather than against your nature.
Life is Wild. Wild Meditation meets life's wildness with playfulness, openness and willingness to dance with the chaos of life.

Why Should I Meditate?
I have no interest in convincing people to do anything. I only want people to join this who want to be here. I do get really excited, however, about sharing the benefits of meditation. I am consistently impressed by the scientific proof and explanations of what meditators have been experiencing for millennia. So, here is a buffet of rationale, for those of you with east-coast minds like mine that may need a "reason" to support your intuition:
Best Reasons:
Practical Reasons:
Scientific Reasons:
Religious/Spiritual Reasons:
Best Reasons:
- Because something inside of you just "knows" it needs to try this -- that it will be life changing, and is worth getting over the fear.
- Nothing else has worked and you are as desperate as I was, willing to try "anything" to heal your life -- this may work!
- You are a human being -- meditation will provide you with a way to understand how your mind, heart and body work.
- If you are suffering, meditation will help you to stop suffering.
- If you are not suffering, meditation will help you to see things in new ways and understand yourself and life in a much more profound way.
Practical Reasons:
- You could really use more peace in your life.
- What could be bad about being more present to your life?
- It really is true: the less time you have in your life, the more you can potentially benefit from meditation. This is your life, we never know when it's over, if you're rushing around you're likely missing it -- the beauty, the magic, the moments of connection, the crazy weirdness, the miracle of being alive.
- Your friends and family will like you better.
- You will see things in entirely new ways-- unless your life is perfect, this is really helpful.
- Never know unless you try.
- At "pay-what-you-can" there is really no risk, and so much to gain!
Scientific Reasons:
- Scientists from Harvard University and the University of Sienna recently found that meditation is so powerful it can change the physiology of a person's brain, resulting in positive changes such as decreased anxiety and depression. In their words: "an increase of cortical thickness in the right insular lobe and somatosensory cortex". In plain english, meditation makes the parts of your brain corresponding to emotion and perception thicker.
- It decreases stress by activating the "rest and digest" brain waves.
- It structurally changes your brain to increase focus and productivity.
- It improves communication and relationships.
- It improves the quality of your sleep.
- It makes you sexier (ok, that one is not scientific, just experiential!).
Religious/Spiritual Reasons:
- Contemplation practices (i.e. meditation) span nearly all religious and mystical traditions as a powerful tool for connecting with the sacred aspects of life.
- Almost all of the most compelling religious historical figures, the ones that even secular people admire, had a meditation practice.
- Meditation brought me, who was raised agnostic, to a direct experience of an all pervasive, unified divinity. I call it Life.
